Steampunk is definitely for me!!!

Hey everyone!  I know this is completely out of my norm - but it's totally worth it!
So, I'm an Etsy junkie!  Don't ask me how I got there, but I happened to stumble upon the most amazing store, and immediately fell in love!!!!

The store is called Inspired by Elizabeth.  She specializes in amazing hand crafted steampunk accessories!
This ring is set on a sterling silver band, with the internal mechanisms of a 1940s Bulova watch, and adorned with Swarovski crystals.  Wear this, and try not to feel like a freaking rock star!!!!!

I knew I had to have one of her pieces, but I had something really specific in mind that I didn't see on her site.  So I sent her a quick email and told her what I had in mind.  Within a few short days, she came up with this design for me - and it was spot on!!!  I wanted to know more about the creative genius behind this, so I asked if we could do an interview!!  HOORAY!

What sparked your interest in the steampunk style?
I had no idea what Steampunk was when I first started. It turned out that the vintage, edgy, victorian design I was using together with the vintage pieces & watch parts I was using combined beautifully into something called Steampunk. I was searching for keywords that buyers use to find my shop and the keyword “steampunk” kept showing up. Once I saw what it was I felt at home. I said “oh yeah that’s me”. I try to add my own special touch to it though to make it unique. Someone once labeled it Steampunk elegance.

Where are you most likely to find inspiration for your work?
I find inspiration all over the place. Most commonly are antique stores, old movies, magazines & just watching people around me and observing how they combine colors & texture.

Is there any piece in particular that has given you the most frustrations during creations?
Yes when I was learning to solder cuff links. I would have everything set up just right and the next thing I know I am flinging tiny pieces around my studio. It is hard to work with such tiny pieces.

Would you ever plan on selling pieces from your line in-store?
It is not one of my goals but never say never.

Which one of your pieces has been the most popular?
My most popular are my Steampunk Rings.

Do you plan on staying with the steampunk style, or do you think you'll ever expand to follow the newest trends?
I am always coming up with new ideas and variations on existing pieces. I think once you label yourself you become creatively stifled. I will probably always keep the old world vintage theme of my shop because that is what I like and what inspires me.

What is the greatest compliment you've ever received from a customer?
It is funny that you ask that because every time I get a message from a customer that brings me to tears I always say “I should print that” but I never do. I also never delete my messages so somewhere in my 66 pages of Etsy conversations are some heartwarming stories that I would have loved to share. I make a lot of earrings for brides & bridesmaids so that is always personal & touching. I have made engagement rings for nervous guys who want to pop the question Steampunk style. My favorite & most touching are the ones where for some reason a person connects on a very personal level with one of my pieces. There is something special about vintage items that brings us back in time & causes old memories to come flooding back in. Most memories come from loved ones such as parents & grandparents. Who wouldn’t want to wear a unique piece that brought back happy memories every time you saw it?

What was the first piece you ever created? Sold?
I cannot remember the first piece I ever created. The first piece I ever sold on Etsy was called “Steampunk Upcycled Necklace Pixie Dust Shaker Vintage Peter Pan”. I had made a necklace out of a vintage salt shaker. Yes I really did. I found a uniquely shaped shaker at an antique store and thought if I filled it with pixie dust (glitter) it would make a whimsical necklace. My dear friend purchased it and I was so happy to have made my first purchase. This was back in the day when I was still using my cell phone for my listing photos. And I don’t mean a good cell phone.

Are you comfortable with taking special requests for a piece?
Yes most of my business comes from special orders.

How long have you been designing jewelry?
Well my first sale was in October 2010 so not too long before that. I was a registered nurse working full time nights prior to this. I ended up with several herniated discs and needed something to occupy my hands and mind. My life had come to an abrupt stand still. I spend a lot of time in bed or hobbling around. I started watching videos on You Tube on how to make jewelry & reserving books at the library for my dear husband to pick up. I began messing around and sharing my creations with my friends on facebook. Eventually a friend recommended I check out Etsy.

These are two other examples of Elizabeth's amazing work!

I have never had so many compliments off of a piece of jewelry before -- except for my wedding rings!!!!
It is such a unique and eye catching piece!  Be sure to stop by the Inspired by Elizabeth store and find your own amazing piece!!  I dare you to go take a look and not find something you simply cannot live without!!!!!
